Many years ago I took a religion class at a local university and one of the professors spoke of a Bible verse that talked about growth in wisdom and stature, and approval from God and man. He expounded on the verse by giving it an acronym of “SIPS”.
Spiritual – having a belief and value system; acknowledging, recognizing and applying your values
Intellectual – continuously learning and growing your knowledge, taking care of your mind
Physical – living a healthful lifestyle, taking care of your body
Social – having fellowship with others, recognizing community, taking care of all your relationships
Several years later, I added two more categories: Creative and Emotional. So, in Jumble like fashion, I made a new acronym: SPICES. A few years ago, I discovered a similar concept from Zig Ziglar‘s Circle of Life goal-oriented diagram, where he added Career and Financial. Unfortunately, I haven’t thought of a clever acronym for those last two categories.
What’s the point to all this? Going back to my Legacy post from a few days ago, these categories remind me what really matters in this life. It’s not about brand names or celebrities or trends, but about my life and what I choose to fulfill. It’s about asking myself [using all of the above categories], what kind of legacy am I leaving behind; what kind of contributions am I giving; what am I doing that matters; is my value system aligned in all of these things; how am I physically able to fulfill these goals…I could ask questions all night. But, not in tonight’s post.
How about you? How are you doing with your life’s categories, your life’s goals?
